Florida Keys in the US has finally approved the plans of releasing millions of genetically modified mosquito in the public.
Genetically Modified Mosquito
The genetically modified mosquito has been developed by adapting the methods of getting genetically modified organisms. This scientifically modified mosquito is known as OX5034 and is made to generate female offspring dying at the larval stage. We all know that female mosquito are the only ones who bite to get blood for feeding their eggs. Contrarily, male mosquitoes rely only on nectar to feed themselves.
Releasing of 750 Million Genetically Modified Mosquitoes
These massive blood-sucking insects will be released in Florida by 2021 and 2022. The purpose behind this thought is to check either this scientifically made mosquito is capable of spraying insecticides to control the widespread of diseases or not. Particularly, it will be focusing on the Aedes aegypti mosquito which has a strong tendency of carrying countless fatal diseases like Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever.
Diseases spread by Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes the tiny creatures are capable of spreading a wide range of diseases. These diseases majorly include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, filariasis, tularemia, Ross River Fever and etc.
Release of Mosquitoes- Controversial Project
It seems that locals and activists are not in favor of doing this experiment right now. According to them, investing in such a “Jurassic Park experiment” is just a wastage of time and money. The state of Florida is undergoing a number of unpleasant events nowadays. These events include COVID-19 crises, racial injustice, and climate change. Despite these devastations, authorities have used monetary and other government resources for a Jurassic Park experiment. Activists feel that there is a need to analyze the impacts brought by this release to the environment. Otherwise, it could possibly go wrong and then no one would be able to turn the course back to normal.
