About 350 Scientists have requested the World Health Organization to update the guidelines in order to protect the public from the airborne spread of COVID-19. However, The World Health Organization did not report any fact that COVID-19 is spread by micro aerosols. Rather, the WHO states that SARS-COV-2 (the virus that causes COVID 19) is spread person-to-person through large respiratory particles.
Medical professionals have lately confirmed that the coronavirus is spread by small respiratory particles. Many of these tiny hang in the air and can be inhaled. Due to their small size, they can extend up to six feet and several meters. Due to this airborne nature of COVID-19, many scientists have requested the WHO to provide information in this regard. It is hoped that the WHO will provide information in this regard so that safety measures can be followed.
How COVID-19 spreads through aerosols?
Researchers have estimated that the virus dissolves in the air when an infected person speaks, coughs, or sneezes. These small viruses are called microdroplets. They float in the air and travel through several meters. Therefore, the risk of its spread is higher in indoor than outdoor ones. These microdroplets can move throughout the room. Flu and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) were also found to spread by microdroplets. It is estimated that the coronavirus spreads in a similar way. Some experts are still confused about the airborne transmission of coronavirus by these tiny particles.
The risk of this spread depends on two major factors, and these are time and exposure. It is not more dangerous if someone is exposed to tiny viral particles for a short time. Conversely, the longer you stay in it, the greater the risk of getting corona. Also, the risk is higher indoor than in an open environment. The reason behind this is the elimination of these particles in the air through the process of evaporation.
How to protect yourself from airborne transmission
Hand washing, social distancing, and mask-wearing, etc. are the best precautionary measures to avoid any sort of spread of corona. By wearing the mask we can largely avoid this tiny droplet transmission. Special masks must be used in indoor gatherings. Wearing a mask not only keeps us safe but also protects everyone around us. Therefore, by following these mandatory precautions, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from this novel corona.
