A recent study has revealed that the nerves embedded in the fat tissues ignite the breakdown of fat molecules. While these fats which are capable of burning neurons previously possessed some unknown powers. Numerous previous researches concluded that one can burn fat either by eating less or increasing physical mobility. Anyhow, the real biology behind this equation is still mysterious to understand.
Role of Leptin Hormone
Nerves have an amazing tendency to grow naturally if they attain the right signal. That signal is nothing more than a hormone Leptin which is produced by the fat cells themselves. There conducted some experiments upon mice in which researchers found something astonishing. They revealed that in the absence of leptin, the bushy crowd of neural fibers present within fat tissues gets shrink. These bushy neural fibers then grow back when this leptin hormone is inserted within mice as a drug. Researchers demonstrated these changes to get the influence of the animal’s ability to burn the packets of energy stored in fat cells.
“The anatomy of the nervous system changes remarkably as a young animal progresses towards adulthood. Anyhow, such a profound way of neural plasticity is not found in adults”, stated by a molecular geneticist. If the same pattern of neural flexibility is found in human growth, then researchers will be able to know the exact reasons for obesity and related diseases.
The link between leptin and fat cells
Leptin is responsible to relay signals between fat factories and the brain. In this way, it permits the nervous system to curb apetite and boost energy expenditure for regulating body weight. Researchers experimented on mice to reveal this relation very clear. Mice deprived of leptin tend to eat more and move less. Due to inadequate utilization of fat to generate heat, mice are unable to survive through the cold. After inserting them with leptin, the same mice swiftly commenced to eat less and move more.
After inserting them with leptin for a longer range, incredible events happened. Mice initiated a breakdown of white fat- the factory of unused calories and regained their tendency to use brown fat to generate heat. This was a slow and gradual change that described why leptin takes much time in altering neurons external to the brain.
Pathway of Leptin
To visualize the inner fat of nerves, researchers looked at the effects of leptin on the fat-embedded neurons up to the hypothalamus region of the brain. They found that growth-boosting messages of leptin travel through the spinal cord back to the neurons in fat. This insight displayed the preliminary example of the regulation of neurons in both white and brown fat through leptin. Following this pathway, fat seems to command the brain about its innervation to function properly.
In the future, it is expected to analyze the role played by this pathway towards human obesity. Most probably, it will offer an exceptional approach for therapy as well. Those suffering from obesity, generate a high amount of leptin and resultantly show a diminished response towards hormone insertion. This diminished response suggests that their brain shows resistance towards the hormone. However, for treating obesity it is proposed that direct activation of nerves that could innervate fat and restore an optimal capability to use stored fat may provide a possible way to treat obesity.
