The company behind Fortnite,Epic Games has announced new security measure to secure users’accounts for one of its popular battle royal game, Fortnite, the Epic Game Store and Unreal Engine users safe from cybercriminals.
Epic Games said in its blog post that it will soon be using a multi-factor authentication system (MFA) by using the dedicated authenticator app or email. The SMS-based authentication will be brought out soon by the company for the games and its platforms.
Epic Games has also confirmed in the post that they will be rolling out text-based multi-factor authentication in the future as the SMS-based authentication process is not that secure.
Additionally, company have begun ensuring security of new passwords by comparing them against the Have I Been Pwned “Pwned Passwords list (v4)” before they are applied to an account, in order to prevent users from securing their account using passwords already well-known to attackers.
MFA will help the user increase and strengthen the security of their account. Currently, the users can choose between using an authenticator app or receiving the 2-factor key on their registered email id.
Epic Games has also said that the SMS-based 2-factor authentication will be available soon for its other games and platforms. The players who have enabled their MFA are receiving the Boogie Down emote for free in Fortnite.
In the blog post, the developer has stated,
“The Epic account system powers Fortnite, the Epic Games store, and Unreal Engine. This account system has never been compromised. However, specific individual Epic accounts have been compromised by hackers using lists of email addresses and passwords leaked from other sites which have been compromised.”
In case, any email account being used with the Epic Account has been compromised in the past, Epic Games will block the account and will force users to reset the password.
