On December 25 – Quaid’s birthday – the New York City Council made a resolution to honor the founder of Pakistan.

The step to rename the Coney Island Avenue –where Pakistani community lives in significant numbers – as “Moammad Ali Jinnah Way” was a result of years of hard work and lobbying by the Pakistan American Youth Organization (PAYO).

Waqil Ahmed, the president of PAYO, was also present on the occasion. He thanked Williams and other city council members for supporting their cause.

Mr Waqil said that PAYO members had worked for years for official recognition of the Pakistani community even though the area around Coney Island Avenue was informally known as “Little Pakistan”.

“We are overjoyed that our efforts succeeded,” he said, explaining the complex procedures and demands involved and which the PAYO members completed.

Speaking on the occasion, Williams said it was an honor for him to inaugurate the renamed avenue.

He was aware of a hard time of the community went through post 9/11 attacks, but their resilience has forced the city council to dedicate a busy street in Brooklyn to the father of their nation.
