The local fire unit said the bridge fallen at around 11:30 a.m. (0930 GMT) amid heavy rainfall. TV indicated pictures of the fallen area of the bridge, built on the A10 toll motorway in the 1960s.

The leader of the emergency vehicle service said there were “dozens of dead", as per Italian news organization Adnkronos. No less than 10 individuals were killed and 20 vehicles were included, local police sources said.

Rebuilding work on the bridge was completed in 2016. The highway administrator said work to shore up the establishment of the bridge was being done at the time of the collapse, including that the bridge was continually checked.

A witness disclosed to Sky Italia TV he saw "eight or nine" vehicles on the bridge when it fallen in what he said was a “apocalyptic scene”.

Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli said in a tweet that he was “following with great apprehension what seems like an immense tragedy”.
